Oscar Padilla, Vice President of Strategy at Luminar, is our guest blogger. He shares his thoughts and insights about Apache Hadoop, Hortonworks Data Platform, and Luminar’s journey to the Data Lake.

Luminar is the first big data analytics provider focused specifically on U.S. Latino consumers. Our company offers analysis based on empirical insights, rather than with a sample-based approach. Apache Hadoop and Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) make this empirical approach work at scale.…

Customers’ Hadoop Journey

We’ve all had two weeks to reflect on Hadoop Summit 2014. One of the biggest differences that stood out in this year’s Summit (as compared to Summit 2013) was the presence of large enterprise customers that are using Apache Hadoop as an important part of their modern data architectures.

Hadoop has gone beyond its original Yahoo use case—indexing the web via a nightly batch MapReduce process —and into the mainstream of daily data processing and analytics with real-time, online, interactive, and batch applications at many notable companies.…

We are less than a week away from start of the seventh annual Hadoop Summit San Jose. With all of the final preparations underway, we wish to highlight some of the not to be missed activities in and around the event. The event is filling fast, but you can still register here.

Here are a few things you don’t want to miss!

  •  Great track content—there is more content than ever with more than 120 informative sessions on Apache Hadoop and related technologies for you to choose from and as always selected by the community and delivered by the experts themselves.
  • The first use of the term BoF session was used at the Digital Equipment Users’ Society (DECUS) conference in the 1960s. Its essence was to bring together like minds and thought leaders—just as birds of the feather flock together— to share and exchange computing ideas, in an informal yet spirited way. Since then, the organizers and sponsors of most computing conferences have been loyal to its essence and spirit.

For ideas and innovation happen in collaboration—not in isolation. …

This year is shaping up to be our biggest and best show and we are working hard to make sure the content is awesome.  In order to make sure content is king at this show, we have assembled some of the brightest in the Hadoop industry to serve as Track Chairs and they are assembling some rock star committees as well. …

    Some notes about Summit

We will return to Amsterdam for Hadoop Summit Europe this year (April 2-3, 2014). Also, we have restructured the content for the event to make sure we, as a community, continue to deliver high value technical content.…

BAM! What a week for Hadoop as we all spent time with around 2500 of our closest friends to spin some YARNs (I saw it over here first). Like me, you’re probably still digesting everything you heard but in the meantime here are some highlights from us.

Modern Data Architecture. Integrating Hadoop into existing data center investments is a hot topic for any enterprise thinking about Big Data. In support of that need there were some announcements with key data center partners:

Today our partner Teradata announced a new offering called the Teradata Portfolio for Hadoop, which is built upon the 100% open source Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). The new products and expanded partnership with Hortonworks offers customers a flexible choice of deployment offerings for Apache Hadoop from one of the most trusted vendors in the data management market worldwide.

    Trusted Adviser

Teradata have been helping their customers to get more value from their data for more than 30 years so this is a natural next step as organizations are looking to evolve their data architectures to capture net new data sources and create new applications.…
