The latest product news and company announcements from Hortonworks

Last week, on July 22nd, we announced the general availability of HDP 2.3. Of the three part blog series, the first blog summarized the key innovations in the release—ease of use & enterprise readiness and how those are helping deliver transformational outcomes—while the second blog focused on data access innovation. In this final part, we explain cloud provisioning, proactive support, and other general improvements across the platform.

Automated Provisioning with Cloudbreak

Since Hortonworks’ acquisition of SequenceIQ, the integrated team has been working hard to complete the deployment automation for public clouds including Microsoft Azure, Amazon EC2, and Google Cloud.…

On July 22nd, we introduced the general availability of HDP 2.3. In part 2 of this blog series, we explore notable improvements and features related to Data Access.

We are especially excited about what these data access improvements mean for our Hortonworks subscribers.

Russell Foltz-Smith, Vice President of Data Platform, at TrueCar summed up the data access impact to his business using earlier versions of HDP, and his enthusiasm for the innovation in this latest release:

TrueCar is in the business of providing truth and transparency to all the parties in the car-buying process,” said Foltz-Smith.…

For Hortonworks, working with and enabling the Hadoop ecosystem is one of our core tenants, and we’re proud of the 1,100+ partners that have joined us in the journey to ensure that Open Enterprise Hadoop interoperates with your existing data center technologies. Today, we’re delighted that we have been named to The Channel Company’s exclusive 2015 CRN® Emerging Vendors List. The annual list features technology vendors that have introduced innovative new products, creating opportunities for channel partners in North America to create solutions for customers.…

We are very pleased to announce that Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) Version 2.3 is now generally available for download. HDP 2.3 brings numerous enhancements across all elements of the platform spanning data access to security to governance. This version delivers a compelling new user experience, making it easier than ever before to “do Hadoop” and deliver transformational business outcomes with Open Enterprise Hadoop.

As we announced at Hadoop Summit in San Jose, there are a number of significant innovations as part of this release including:

HDP 2.3 represents the very latest innovation from across the Hadoop ecosystem.…

In version 1.2.0, Apache Spark introduced a Data Source API (SPARK-3247) to enable deep platform integration with a larger number of data sources and sinks. We are proud to announce that support for the Apache Optimized Row Columnar (ORC) file format is included in Spark 1.4 as a new data source. This support was added through a collaboration between Hortonworks and Databricks, tracked by SPARK-2883.

The Apache ORC file format and associated libraries recently became a top level project at the Apache Software Foundation.…

Over the past two quarters, Hortonworks has been able to attract over 200 new customers. We are attempting to feed the hunger our customers have shown for Hadoop over the past two years. We are seeing truly transformational business outcomes delivered through the use of Hadoop across all industries. The most prominent use cases are focused on:

  • Data Architecture Optimization – keeping 100% of the data at up to 1/100th of the cost while enriching traditional data warehouse analytics
  • A Single View of customers, products, and supply chains
  • Predictive Analytics – delivering behavioral insight, preventative maintenance, and resource optimization
  • Data Discovery – exploring datasets, uncovering new findings, and operationalizing insights

What we have consistently heard from our customers and partners, as they adopt Hadoop, is that they would like Hortonworks to focus our engineering activities on three key themes: Ease of Use, Enterprise Readiness, and Simplification.…

Hortonworks is pleased to announce the general availability of Apache Spark in Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP)— now available on our downloads page. With HDP 2.2.4 Hortonworks now offers support for your developers and data scientists using Apache Spark 1.2.1.

HDP’s YARN-based architecture enables multiple applications to share a common cluster and dataset while ensuring consistent levels of service and response. Now Spark is one of the many data access engines that works with YARN and that is supported in an HDP enterprise data lake.…

Today we’re delighted to announce our acquisition of SequenceIQ. This acquisition, expected to close in Q2, will accelerate our ability to provide deployment automation for Enterprise Hadoop across public and private clouds. Please join us in welcoming the SequenceIQ team to the Hortonworks family!

Enterprises are embracing Apache Hadoop to enable their modern data architectures and power new analytic applications. The freedom to choose the on-premises or cloud environments for Hadoop that best meets the business needs is a critical requirement.…

Advances in Hadoop security, governance and operations have accelerated adoption of the platform by enterprises everywhere. Apache Ambari is the open source operational platform for provisioning, managing and monitoring Hadoop clusters from a single pane of glass, and with the Apache Ambari 1.7.0 release last year, Ambari made it far easier for enterprises to adopt Hadoop.

Today, we are excited to announce the community release of Apache Ambari 2.0, which will further accelerate enterprise Hadoop usage by simplifying the technical challenges that slow adoption the most.…

We are excited to announce the general availability of Hortonworks Sandbox on Microsoft Azure. Hortonworks Sandbox is already a very popular environment for Developers, Data Scientists and Administrators to learn and experiment with the latest innovations in Hortonworks Data Platform.

The hundreds of innovations span Hadoop, Kafka, Storm, Hive, Pig, YARN, Ambari, Falcon, Ranger and other components that HDP is comprised of. We also provide tutorials to help you get a jumpstart on how to use HDP to implement a Modern Data Architecture at your organization.…

Forrester recently called Apache Hadoop adoption “mandatory” for the enterprise. For most organizations, moving forward with Hadoop is no longer a question of if, but when. Hadoop-powered insight into big data is enabling market disruption in every industry and the market winners are those who handle that data most effectively and at the lowest cost.

As with any new platform, making decisions on how best to implement and for what purpose can be challenging.…

This is a unique moment in time. Fueled by open source, Apache Hadoop has become an essential part of the modern enterprise data architecture and the Hadoop market is accelerating at an amazing rate.

The impressive thing about successful open source projects is the pace of the “release early, release often” development cycle, also known as upstream innovation. The process moves through major and minor releases at a regular clip and the downstream users get to pick the releases and versions they want to consume for their specific needs.…

This guest post is from Gavin Sherry, Vice President of Engineering, Data, at Pivotal. A long time contributor to database technology, Gavin was one of the early contributors to the PostgreSQL project. This led him to join the Greenplum Database R&D team. More recently, Gavin launched Pivotal HAWQ, Pivotal’s SQL on Hadoop engine.

In the ten years since Hadoop was first conceived at Yahoo!, the big data market has taken off.…

Hortonworks has expanded its certification program to create an industry-recognized certification program where individuals prove their Hadoop knowledge by performing hands-on tasks on a Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) cluster, as opposed to answering multiple-choice questions. Hortonworks University will be offering three new certification exams:

  • HDP Certified Developer
  • HDP Certified Java Developer
  • HDP Certified Administrator

The HDP Certified Developer (HDPCD) exam is the first of our new hands-on, performance-based exams designed for Hadoop developers working with frameworks like Pig, Hive, Sqoop and Flume.…

As we approach the opening bell on Nasdaq and another milestone for open source Apache Hadoop, we at Hortonworks want to thank those who have contributed deeply to this journey.
