The latest product news and company announcements from Hortonworks

Hortonworks has redesigned its certification program by creating hands-on, performance-based exams. Our new exams consist of tasks that candidates perform on a live HDP cluster. We are the first Hadoop provider to exclusively offer hands-on certification exams! The goal is to distinguish our exams from multiple-choice certifications. This will provide a measure of skills recognized in the Hadoop industry as meaningful and relevant to real-world tasks that a candidate would perform on the job.…

Today, Tech Mahindra announced that their in-house developed analytics platform Tech Mahindra Analytics Platform (TAP) has joined the family of Hortonworks certified partners and products. In my last blog post, I told you how excited I am about the huge opportunity ahead for us at Hortonworks. In addition to continued innovation in HDP, there is a huge opportunity for the industry being driven by the Internet of Things (IoT). I think it’s broader than the Internet of Things, and is really the Internet of Everything and ANYTHING.

Whether it is in moving metal (like cars or jet engines), wearable technology or even simple things like our modern refrigerator, sensors and the data they create are the next big thing.…

Hortonworks is hitting the road again with another worldwide roadshow. The Open Enterprise Hadoop roadshow will offer business and technical content, a chance to meet and speak with people who are driving innovation in Hadoop, and a valuable opportunity to network with others who are using Apache Hadoop to transform their business.

The format of these seminars is a full day of Hadoop content. We’ll open with a general session discussing technology innovations around Hadoop and how organizations are transforming their businesses with Hadoop.…

Today, Hortonworks and EMC announced a broadened relationship. Hortonworks announced that EMC has chosen Hortonworks as an EMC Select Partner, which means that EMC will now be able to resell the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).…

With new types of data driving growth and competitive advantage as never before, it’s crucial to implement the right solution for your data lake. Power and performance are important, of course, as are security and efficiency, but more fundamentally, you also need to be sure it’s going to work as advertised. That’s where the EMC Business Partner Program for Technology comes in, helping customers find industry-leading technologies that are optimized, validated and certified with EMC technologies.…

Last week, on July 22nd, we announced the general availability of HDP 2.3. Of the three part blog series, the first blog summarized the key innovations in the release—ease of use & enterprise readiness and how those are helping deliver transformational outcomes—while the second blog focused on data access innovation. In this final part, we explain cloud provisioning, proactive support, and other general improvements across the platform.

Automated Provisioning with Cloudbreak

Since Hortonworks’ acquisition of SequenceIQ, the integrated team has been working hard to complete the deployment automation for public clouds including Microsoft Azure, Amazon EC2, and Google Cloud.…

On July 22nd, we introduced the general availability of HDP 2.3. In part 2 of this blog series, we explore notable improvements and features related to Data Access.

We are especially excited about what these data access improvements mean for our Hortonworks subscribers.

Russell Foltz-Smith, Vice President of Data Platform, at TrueCar summed up the data access impact to his business using earlier versions of HDP, and his enthusiasm for the innovation in this latest release:

TrueCar is in the business of providing truth and transparency to all the parties in the car-buying process,” said Foltz-Smith.…

In version 1.2.0, Apache Spark introduced a Data Source API (SPARK-3247) to enable deep platform integration with a larger number of data sources and sinks. We are proud to announce that support for the Apache Optimized Row Columnar (ORC) file format is included in Spark 1.4 as a new data source. This support was added through a collaboration between Hortonworks and Databricks, tracked by SPARK-2883.

The Apache ORC file format and associated libraries recently became a top level project at the Apache Software Foundation.…

Over the past two quarters, Hortonworks has been able to attract over 200 new customers. We are attempting to feed the hunger our customers have shown for Hadoop over the past two years. We are seeing truly transformational business outcomes delivered through the use of Hadoop across all industries. The most prominent use cases are focused on:

  • Data Architecture Optimization – keeping 100% of the data at up to 1/100th of the cost while enriching traditional data warehouse analytics
  • A Single View of customers, products, and supply chains
  • Predictive Analytics – delivering behavioral insight, preventative maintenance, and resource optimization
  • Data Discovery – exploring datasets, uncovering new findings, and operationalizing insights

What we have consistently heard from our customers and partners, as they adopt Hadoop, is that they would like Hortonworks to focus our engineering activities on three key themes: Ease of Use, Enterprise Readiness, and Simplification.…
