Data archival in Hive

I have Hive tables created with large data loaded in it and I need to archive this data.

But suppose if the schema for new data files coming changes tomorrow. So DDL for the Hive table also needs to be changed. Hive supports Alter column, but if we change the schema to fit the new files i.e. By remove or add a column. Then what about old data that we have? How we can query old data correctly with the new schema?

If not Hive, what other option is available for data archival in Hadoop?
