I’m trying to upgrade to HDP 1.2.0 from a 1.1.1 and am running into this error on one of the nodes :

    root@xdc-tst-mapre-002 usr]# su – hdfs -c ‘/usr/lib/hadoop/bin/ –config /etc/hadoop/conf start datanode’
    starting datanode, logging to /var/log/hadoop/hdfs/
    Exception in thread “main” java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
Caused by: org.apache.commons.logging.LogConfigurationException: User-specified log class ‘org.apache.commons.logging.impl.Log4JLogger’ cannot be found or is not useable.

    at org.apache.commons.logging.impl.LogFactoryImpl.getInstance(
    at org.apache.commons.logging.LogFactory.getLog(
    at org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.datanode.DataNode.(
Could not find the main class: org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.datanode.DataNode. Program will exit.

I’ve tried to remove hadoop (yum erase hadoop), reset the ambari-server and reinstall but the same error comes up each time on this node. Would appreciate some help.

could you please explain what you did?
Upgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.2.0 does not have direct upgrade path and is not supported…

    Thank you!
