Trying to create a table with the Beeswax interface
    CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE tweets (
    id BIGINT,
    created_at STRING,
    source STRING,
    favorited BOOLEAN,
    retweeted_status STRUCT<
    text:STRING,
    user:STRUCT,
    retweet_count:INT>,
    entities STRUCT<
    urls:ARRAY<STRUCT>,
    user_mentions:ARRAY<STRUCT>,
    hashtags:ARRAY<STRUCT>>,
    text STRING,
    user STRUCT,
    in_reply_to_screen_name STRING
    )
    PARTITIONED BY (datehour INT)
    ROW FORMAT SERDE ‘com.cloudera.hive.serde.JSONSerDe’
    LOCATION ‘/user/flume/tweets’

and I get the following error:

FAILED: Error in metadata: Cannot validate serde: com.cloudera.hive.serde.JSONSerDe
FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.DDLTask

    from the log:
    13/06/18 03:54:10 INFO ql.Driver:
FAILED: Error in metadata: Cannot validate serde: com.cloudera.hive.serde.JSONSerDe
13/06/18 03:54:10 ERROR exec.Task: FAILED: Error in metadata: Cannot validate serde: com.cloudera.hive.serde.JSONSerDe
    org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.metadata.HiveException: Cannot validate serde: com.cloudera.hive.serde.JSONSerDe

    Any idea anyone?

    thanks,

    Wim

    Hi Wim,

It’s good to hear that you figured this out. To restart Hive Server you need to first find the process it’s using and kill it, then start it up again with >bin/hive –service hiveserver &.

    Thanks,
    Ted.

Solved it myself … by accident

I restarted my virtual machine and now it works. It seems it was not sufficient to put the jar file in the lib directory but something needed restarting as well.

Can someone explain me how parts can be restarted?
In this case I added a jar to the directory /usr/lib/hive/lib. How can I make sure that it is picked up?

    thanks,

    Wim
