    Hi,

    I’m trying to do a join in Hive and when I execute the query I get the following error:

    FAILED: Execution Error, return code 3 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.MapredLocalTask

    We’re on HDP 1.3.2

    Query syntax is pretty simple:

    SELECT
    t1.col1,
    t2.col2
    FROM t1
    JOIN t2
    ON (t1.col1=t2.col1)

    The fields being joined are both BIGINT. One table is ~40GB combined, the other is substantially smaller.

    Need any additional info?

    Thanks for your help, Yi. I actually fixed this by upping the java heap size to 1024

    Hi Nick,

    Can you post the error message from hiveserver2.log/out about this failed query?

    Thanks,
    Yi

    No luck on executing via beeline:

    Error: Error while processing statement: FAILED: Execution Error, return code 3 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.MapredLocalTask (state=08S01,code=3)

    Hi Nick,

    Hue goes through hiveserver2. Can you try the query in beeline client?

    Thanks,
    Yi

    Hi Yi,

    I have an update on this. The error I reported above was a result of a Hive query executed within Hue. When I tried the same query in Hive CLI it worked just fine.

    Does that change any of your requests for additional data? If not, I’ll check those settings and get the log for you to review.

    Thanks for the help,
    Nick

    Hi Nick,

    Is t2 the bigger table? How small is the smaller table?
    Can you check these hive settings:
    set hive.auto.convert.join;
    set hive.mapjoin.smalltable.filesize;

    Also a full log of the failed job?

    Thanks,
    Yi
