What is the correct way to query date field in the nyse_stocks example?

    For instance:
    select distinct date from nyse_stocks
    OR
    select distinct [date] from nyse_stocks

    results in:
FAILED: Parse Error: line 1:16 cannot recognize input near ‘date’ ‘from’ ‘nyse_stocks’ in select expression

    Hi Nitin,

I too have seen queries not work and table not get imported when one of the columns was named ‘date.’ The fix for it that Carter mentions has worked every time.

    Thanks,
    Ted.

    Carter,
You may be right about ‘date’ being a reserved keyword in Hive. That’s why I tried [date] to disambiguate, which fails too.
The tutorial makers may take note or provide an example to clarify.

    Thanks.

    Nitin,

Probably date is a reserved keyword in Hive. Try re-importing the data and change the date column name to something like dt and try the query again.
