Not able to run the WordCount Program

  • #32545

    Hi Everyone,

Recently I have downloaded Hortonworks Sandbox 1.3 for VMware+RC6 for learning Hadoop/BigData. I am trying to run the Hadoop’s very basic program “WordCount” which comes as an example from Apache distribution. When I login into my Hadoop virtual machine (which is CentOS) thru Oracle VM VirtualBox, I tried to issue the following command :
    hadoop jar hadoop-examples.jar

but it says Not a valid JAR /root/hadoop-examples.jar

It is trying to search hadoop-example.jar within the root folder, and apparently there is no such jar.

Can anyone pls tell me where is Hadoop_Home on Hortworks Hadoop image???

Appreciate your time for going through my post.

P.S.: I am new to Hadoop and Unix environment

    Hi Jameel,

Please try specifying full path of hadoop-example.jar. Usually it is located in /usr/lib/hadoop/hadoop-examples.jar. You will also need to specify the program you would like to use and arguments.

    hadoop jar /usr/lib/hadoop/hadoop-examples.jar wordcount [-m ] [-r ]

Some more information can be found here:

    Hope this helps,
