    Is there a way to run the region server without using 1gb mem. I have run out of the box hadoop on 512m. What is restricting it?

    Did you run the full stack in 512 Mb?
    Or you just run selected subsystems?

    This is how HBase region server works. It need to have 1 GB of heap and can not be started with smaller size.
