Hortonworks University Announces an Academic Program

Hortonworks proudly announces the launch of a new education program for Academic Institutions. This program was created to introduce students to the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and to provide them with the necessary technical skills to complement their chosen academic curriculum.

Accredited colleges and universities around the world are invited to apply to become a Hortonworks Academic Partner, allowing them to incorporate our course materials into their classrooms at a low cost to students.

  • No cost to join
  • Choice of 3 Courses: HDP Operations, HDP Developer: Pig/Hive, and HDP Data Science
  • Instructors prep at their own pace
  • Students must be currently enrolled in the college or university
  • Instructional hours spread across a quarter, semester or trimester

The Big Data skills gap is real.

  • More than 85% of Fortune 500 organizations will be unable to effectively exploit big data analytics in 2015 (Gartner)
  • 46% of companies report inadequate staffing for big data analytics (TDWI Research)
  • By 2018 the US could face a shortfall of as many as 1.5 million analysts skilled in big data (McKinsey)

Hortonworks provides our students with a strong foundation to work in the challenging field of analytics, says Richard Glass, co-director of the Advanced Applied Analytics Center at Bryant University. Bryant University is very excited about being able to partner with Hortonworks to bring leading edge big data technology to our more than 200 applied analytics majors.

By partnering with accredited colleges and universities, Hortonworks University is able to meet those needs.  It’s a Win-Win situation.

Becoming an Academic Partner is easy!

  • Academic Institutions are slow and antiquated. Why don’t you guys just release online courses for free like MapR and Coursera?

Online courses are the future – thanks to current technology they cost almost nothing* to reproduce after they’re written and we don’t have to deal with mediocre teachers since we can scale a few great teachers to an almost infinite number of students.

(* almost nothing still includes the cost of running computers – electricity, cooling, datacenter space – if you’re an enterprise you probably have spare web server capacity already…)
