Since our founding in mid-2011, our vision for Hadoop has been that “half the world’s data will be processed by Hadoop”. With that long-term vision in mind, we focus on the mission to establish Hadoop as the foundational technology of the modern enterprise data architecture that unlocks a whole new class of data-driven applications that weren’t previously possible.
We use what we call the “Blueprint for Enterprise Hadoop” for guiding how we invest in Hadoop-related open source technologies as well as enabling the key integration points that are important for deploying Enterprise Hadoop within a modern data architecture, on-premises or in the cloud, in a way that enables the business and its users to maximize the value from their data.
The blueprint manifests itself as the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), an enterprise-grade data management platform, built on Apache Hadoop and powered by YARN, that provides batch, interactive, and real-time data processing and access as well as a comprehensive set of capabilities that address the core requirements of security, operations and data governance.
We’re known for building out the capabilities of our platform in a 100% open source way, and our acquisition of XA Secure last May provides a perfect example of our strategy in action. XA Secure provided a commercial software solution that provided a comprehensive approach to security as outlined in the Security pillar in the blueprint above, and since the acquisition, we’ve made the technology available for all to download and freely use from our website. More importantly, and consistent with our open source model, we announced that this technology officially lives on as Apache Argus, an incubator project within the Apache Software Foundation.
Since there’s still so much more work to be done to implement the Blueprint for Enterprise Hadoop, we’re always excited to add talented individuals to the team who are passionate about our vision and mission and can provide a unique and refreshing perspective to our efforts.
With that said, I am pleased to announce that Brian Marshall has joined Hortonworks as Vice President of Corporate Development. Brian comes to us from ISI Group where he was a partner and head of the fundamental technology research effort with a particular emphasis on emerging disruptive technologies. For those who know Brian and have benefitted from his research, you know that he brings to Hortonworks a wealth of knowledge of the enterprise software market and the vendor landscape.
We are bullish about how Brian can not only contribute to our mission to establish Hadoop as the foundational technology of the modern enterprise data architecture but also help accelerate and scale our efforts towards delivering all of the necessary capabilities of the Blueprint for Enterprise Hadoop.
On behalf of everyone at Hortonworks, I’d like to welcome Brian to the team.
