Cloud Systems Engineer

G&A - IT | Santa Clara, CA - HQ

Hortonworks is looking for a talented, passionate, and motivated Cloud Systems Engineer who will be responsible for the technical ownership, design, planning, implementation, and highest levels of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission critical enterprise systems. This individual will work within the Technical Operations Team, and will primarily support our managed services platform, applications, and infrastructure within AWS and other cloud providers.

The ideal candidate for this role will have experience designing, deploying, and maintaining complex applications within AWS, Azure, GCP, or other cloud platforms. This individual will have both strong technical problem-solving skills, and outstanding people skills. The ability to work well under pressure, with minimal supervision, and with shifting priorities, while being an organized self-starter is key for success in this role.


  • Manage day-to-day operations of mission-critical applications, including accompanying infrastructure (DNS, VPN, security groups, host-based & cloud firewalls, etc.)
  • Develop new systems and application implementation plans and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability
  • Cross-train technical staff in how to manage and maintain applications
  • Lead problem-solving efforts, often involving outside vendors, other support personnel, and other entities within Hortonworks
  • Provide hands-on server & cloud support
  • Ensure high availability and performance of mission-critical applications and resources
  • Develop procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of platforms, applications, and server operating systems
  • Stay current with technological developments in systems engineering and cloud technology


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or another related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • Four years of work experience in cloud systems design, programming, and server systems support
  • High level of proficiency with the Linux command line on both Debian and RHEL based distributions
  • Extensive experience using config management automation tools including Ansible, Puppet, Git, etc.
  • Scripting and programming experience in both Bash and Python
  • Basic understanding of network topologies and protocols
  • Solid understanding of systems, network, and application security best practices
  • Ability to: plan, organize, and document complex system design activities; configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies & procedures; communicate technical and complex information both verbally and via writing; establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility; perform multiple tasks concurrently, and respond to emergency situations effectively
  • Participation in 24/7 on-call rotation schedule


  • Experience administering or working with OpenStack clouds
  • Basic Active Directory experience including an understanding of AD-LDAP usage
  • Container experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar technologies
  • Certifications including AWS Professional level, Cisco CCNA, Red Hat RHCE, etc.
  • Experience creating and maintaining certificate authorities
  • Network experience with load balancers and/or firewalls
  • Experience with vulnerability remediation
