Staff Software Engineer – Cloud Performance

Staff Software Engineer – Cloud Performance (HDI)

Hortonworks is looking for a Staff Engineer with strong distributed systems expertise & performance engineering expertise to join the Cloud team. We are charged with making HDP run well in the cloud environments, and bringing Dataplane services to the cloud that would use HDP clusters and offer end-to-end experiences to our customers, for pure cloud and hybrid cloud use cases.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed performance characterizations of the HDP stack’s components (Apache Hive, Apache Spark, etc.) in the cloud (HDI, GCP, Azure and AWS)
  • Drive the component products’ roadmap by identifying performance improvements based on repeatable measurements
  • Work with the component teams and help create the infrastructure to run large-scale distributed performance tests that can be used to validate HDP releases in the cloud
  • Identify tradeoffs between cloud resources usage & corresponding costs for the typical use cases to do with large-scale data processing in the cloud
  • Speak and evangelize in conferences and blogs about Big Data performance management
  • Understand partner & customer requirements to do with HDI (Microsoft’s fully managed Hadoop offering), and collaborate with engineers there. Work with the Quality Assurance teams on need basis to certify ongoing releases for the HDI platform

Requirements:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science
  • 9years of hands-on software design, implementation and test experience with strong understanding of distributed & large-scale systems
  • Deep knowledge of system architecture, including process, memory, storage and network management is highly desired
  • Demonstrable and strong experience in JVM internals, performance measurement and monitoring tools
  • Experience with any or some of Apache Hadoop, Apache Kafka, Apache Hive and/or Apache Spark a big plus
  • Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment
