Staff Program Manager – Technical

Brief Description

Hortonworks Engineering Team is looking for an exceptionally talented staff technical program manager, to deliver value to our partners by enabling them in their journey through Hadoop. In this role you will work closely with Engineering, Business and Product partner teams and leadership across functions to define strategies, align project priorities and coordinate execution. You will enable extended team effectiveness and productivity by providing insight, plans and process to execute highly cross-functional projects at scale.

As a Technical Program Manager on the team

  • Work with partners to rapidly assess and understand needs, and help business development team in creating SOW
  • Develop and manage a detailed project or program plan that takes into account all requirements, constraints, resources, and deliverables associated with the defined objectives
  • Work internally within a matrixed, organization, as well as with partners to execute and implement the plan
  • Drive day to day activities with partners, engineering, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Aggregate, organize, and communicate program and project information to share with customers and internal teams
  • Surface key issues and changes which may impact expected business results
  • Effectively manage risk, partnering with engineering teams to ensure the right decisions are made at the right time, appropriate communication occurs, and plans are adjusted to reflect necessary fluctuations in goals and requirements
  • Coordinate deliverables with geographically and time zone distributed teams
  • Identify gaps in processes and implement improvements
  • You will have end to end ownership of cross-functional execution, including program definition, roadmap planning, resource planning and project execution.
  • You will work closely with business and operations leadership, including executive leadership at Hortonworks, to define the product and provide updates on the program.
  • At the heart of this role is delivery. You will be hands-on in driving the delivery of critical business initiatives, managing all aspects of the project such as project planning, requirements definition, risk management, communication, and implementation planning.
  • You will be responsible for making project decisions, achieving tactical goals while retaining a strategic focus.

 Basic Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in computer science, or equivalent experience required.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development.
  • 5+ years of technical program management or project management experience.
  • Ability to lead cross functional teams of developers, designers, test engineers.
  • A proven track record of delivering initiatives from conception through completion on time, within budget and with an agreed scope.
  • Strong people skills, with distinctive ability to motivate and influence people without authority or a direct reporting relationship
  • Excellent negotiation, conflict management and resolution skills. You diplomatically facilitate teams to the successful resolution of issues
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels with executives and technical teams
  • Strong insight and vision into effective software release processes for large cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with multiple development methodologies including Agile
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to work with technical and non-technical audiences; as well as, communicate as effectively to individual contributors as you do with management.
  • Strong passion for quality and attention to details
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new technologies 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in Hadoop and other Big Data related technologies
  • Strong business and technical vision
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • Developed technical acumen and strong organizational, project management, analysis and communication skills.
  • Data centric skills and focus (e.g. master data management, data analysis, data quality, data integration, data governance, analytics, etc).
  • A deep understanding of software development in a team, and a track record of shipping software on time
