First and Only Production Ready Hadoop Distriution for Windows and Linux
PALO ALTO, Calif.—May 21, 2013—Hortonworks, a leading contributor to Apache Hadoop, today announced the general availability of Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) for Windows, a 100-percent open source data platform powered by Apache Hadoop. HDP for Windows is the first production-ready Apache Hadoop-based distribution that runs on both Windows and Linux, enabling enterprise organizations to capture, process and share data in any format and at scale, as well as uncover business insights from existing and new big data sources. Since beta availability, there has been strong interest in HDP for Windows across a wide range of industries including automotive, manufacturing, financial services and government. HDP for Windows is generally available now for download from Hortonworks.
Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows is the only distribution that enables organizations to run Hadoop-based applications natively on Windows and Linux, providing a common user experience and interoperability across operating systems. Customers will also have complete portability of their Hadoop applications between on-premises and cloud deployments via HDP for Windows and Microsoft’s Windows Azure HDInsight Service. HDP for Windows offers the millions of customers running their businesses on Microsoft technologies an ecosystem friendly Hadoop-based solution that integrates with familiar business analytics tools such as Microsoft Excel, and is built for the enterprise and Windows.
Built and packaged by the core architects of Apache Hadoop, Hortonworks Data Platform includes all of the necessary components to refine and explore new data sources, and find new business insights. As an ecosystem-friendly platform, HDP extends existing investments in applications, tools and processes with Hadoop.
“Microsoft is committed to offering the best solutions for big data, and Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows extends our efforts to provide big data customers with access to Apache Hadoop-based solutions,” said Eron Kelly, general manager of product marketing for SQL Server at Microsoft Corp. “HDP for Windows not only enables organizations to deploy Hadoop projects on Windows Server but also allows for easy migration to Windows Azure HDInsight Service in the cloud. Customers gain great Hadoop-based solutions across whatever environment they choose.”
Anand Raman, vice president of business development at Impetus, a Hortonworks partner, said, “This is a great move toward enhancing the big data ecosystem. Customers can derive value by implementing HDP for Windows and analyzing their structured and unstructured data, while leveraging and extending their existing infrastructure. We have had customers request 100 percent open source Apache Hadoop running on Windows, and this general availability release enables Impetus to architect and implement a secure reliable, enterprise-ready Hadoop platform for enterprises across verticals.”
“With this release, we are helping to cement Apache Hadoop’s role in the enterprise data architecture of the future,” said Shaun Connolly, vice president of corporate strategy at Hortonworks.” We expect a massive expansion of the Hadoop ecosystem and rapid adoption of HDP for Windows by enterprises that use Windows.”
