Hortonworks announces its Hortonworks Data Platform is now Microsoft Azure Certified

New certified offering extends 100 percent open source Apache Hadoop to Azure virtual machines for the enterprise

PALO ALTO, Calif., and NEW YORK, NY—October 15, 2014—Hortonworks®, the leading contributor to and provider of enterprise Apache™ Hadoop®, today announced its 100 percent open source Hadoop solution Hortonworks Data Platform is now certified on Microsoft Azure to handle and process big data workloads. This new capability is 100 percent interoperable with Microsoft Azure HDInsight, Microsoft Analytics Platform System and HDP for deploying Hadoop in the cloud.

This new certification extends the deployment options for Microsoft customers by providing them with complete interoperability between workloads on-premises and in the cloud. Hortonworks uniquely offers Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows, a 100 percent native Windows Server distribution of Hadoop that is also fully compatible with Azure HDInsight.

“As the first Apache Hadoop distribution on Azure we are glad to see the Hortonworks Data Platform achieve Microsoft Azure Certification,” said Mitch Ferguson, vice president of business development, Hortonworks. “This provides users with powerful deployment options on our Azure Infrastructure as a Service offering.”

Depth of Partnership

Hortonworks and Microsoft have a more than three-year history of delivering solutions for Big Data on Windows. During this time, Microsoft has relied on its collaboration with Hortonworks to develop and support Hadoop on Windows Server as well as the core platform for HDInsight and the Hadoop region of the Microsoft Analytics Platform System.

“Microsoft is focused on giving organizations the best cloud platform for data,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, Cloud and Enterprise at Microsoft. “To that end, Hortonworks is a key partner of Microsoft and we are pleased to be Hortonworks’ preferred cloud provider.  With the availability of HDP as an Azure Certified virtual machine customers have more options to run their big data workloads whether it be as a hosted VM, a managed service, on-premises, or in hybrid scenarios.”

Hortonworks will be attending Strata/Hadoop World, October 15-17 at the Javits Center in New York City. For more information about Hortonworks and its partnership with Microsoft, please visit the Hortonworks booth #117.
