Hortonworks Demonstrates Steadfast Support of Apache Software Foundation with Gold-Level Sponsorship

Apache Hadoop Support and Training Provider to Help Advance Apache Community Projects

Sunnyvale, Calif.—September 28, 2011—Hortonworks, a leading contributor to Apache Hadoop projects, today announced that it is now a Gold sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a Gold-level sponsor, Hortonworks will help fuel the growth of the Apache community, which includes more than 70 top-level projects, over 350 active members, more than 3,000 committers and countless contributors and users. Hortonworks joins AMD, Facebook, Google, HP, IBM, Microsoft, and Yahoo! as Gold or higher level sponsors of Apache.

Hortonworks will also be a Gold sponsor at this year’s ApacheCon North America 2011, taking place November 7-11 in Vancouver, BC. Hortonworks CEO Eric Baldeschwieler will be a keynote speaker at the event. His keynote address is entitled, “The Apache Way Done Right: The Success of Hadoop.”

“We welcome Hortonworks to the ASF Sponsorship program at the Gold level,” said Jim Jagielski, ASF President. “Engaging with the Foundation through corporate and individual contributions allows our all-volunteer projects to continue to develop industry-leading innovations without worrying about day-to-day operational support. As a non-profit organization, our rapid growth wouldn’t be possible without these much-needed funds.”

Sponsors like Hortonworks enable the ASF to address its expenses while expanding its leadership in the developer and open source communities. Funding provided by sponsorships enables the ASF to perform proactive hardware procurement, enhance its community outreach, support developer hackathons and user groups, and perform non-code related improvements to projects.

“We are proud to support the advancement of Apache projects through our Gold-level sponsorship. Hortonworks is dedicated to growing the Hadoop ecosystem and Apache has made tremendous contributions to this end,” said Eric Baldeschwieler, CEO at Hortonworks. “Our commitment to the ASF is a critical step toward fulfilling Hortonworks’ mission to make Apache Hadoop the de facto platform for managing big data in the enterprise.”

About The Apache Software Foundation (ASF)

Established in 1999, the all-volunteer Foundation oversees nearly one hundred fifty leading Open Source projects, including Apache HTTP Server — the world’s most popular Web server software. Through the ASF’s meritocratic process known as “The Apache Way,” more than 300 individual Members and 2,500 Committers successfully collaborate to develop freely available enterprise-grade software, benefiting millions of users worldwide: thousands of software solutions are distributed under the Apache License; and the community actively participates in ASF mailing lists, mentoring initiatives, and ApacheCon, the Foundation’s official user conference, trainings, and expo. The ASF is funded by individual donations and corporate sponsors including AMD, Basis Technology, Cloudera, Facebook, Google, Hortonworks, IBM, HP, Matt Mullenweg, Microsoft, SpringSource/VMware, and Yahoo!.
