Hortonworks to Deliver Next-Generation of Apache Hadoop

Hortonworks Data Platform Features Apache Hadoop 0.23 Code Tested Across Hundreds of Applications in World’s Largest Hadoop Deployment

SUNNYVALE, Calif.—January 19, 2012— Hortonworks, a leading contributor to Apache Hadoop projects, today announced Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) version 2. Leveraging Apache Hadoop 0.23, the first major update to Hadoop in more than three years, HDP v2 will provide the Apache Hadoop ecosystem with a powerful, stable and enterprise viable platform for harnessing the power of big data.

Created from the work done in Apache by Hortonworks, Yahoo! and the rest of the vibrant Apache community, Hadoop 0.23 provides the critical foundation for the next wave of Apache Hadoop innovation. Featuring the next-generation MapReduce architecture, HDFS Federation and High Availability advancements, Hadoop 0.23 is currently available as individual project downloads from Designed for enterprise-scale deployments and integration with the broader ISV ecosystem, Hortonworks Data Platform v2 will provide Hadoop 0.23 within a fully integrated and tested technology preview release in Q1 2012.

“With more than three years of development and much anticipation, Apache Hadoop 0.23 delivers important advancements in scalability, performance, high availability and data integrity,” said Eric Baldeschwieler, CEO of Hortonworks. “Apache Hadoop 0.23 is currently being tested across hundreds of applications in the world’s largest Hadoop deployment. We are excited to make the technology advancements in Apache Hadoop 0.23 available through an easily consumable version via the Hortonworks Data Platform v2.”
While the previously announced HDP v1 leverages the stable, production-ready Apache Hadoop 1.0 distribution, HDP v2 is built on the next-generation of Apache Hadoop innovation (Hadoop 0.23) and features a number of enhancements over previous Apache Hadoop releases:

  • Next-generation MapReduce Architecture adds advancements in scalability, performance and High Availability, decouples MapReduce from the resource management architecture and enables new application types to plug into Hadoop, including stream processing, graph processing, bulk synchronous processing and message passing interface (MPI);
  • HDFS NameNode High Availability improves data integrity and supports multiple failover options;
  • HDFS Federation provides a clear separation of Namespace and Block Storage and improves scalability, isolation and multitenant architectures; and
  • Most up-to-date stable Hadoop components including HCatalog, HBase, Hive and Pig.

Apache Hadoop 0.23 is currently being actively tested and working its way towards a final, stable release later in 2012.
