Certifications Unavailable Sept. 20th 2018 - Jan. 14th 2019

Hortonworks University has a rich education program that includes track-based instructor-led courses, self-paced courses, and certifications. Currently, our Certification Program has 4 certifications, one multiple choice and 3 performance based.

The Education team is hard at work and gearing up for some major releases across the entire catalog. The Certification Program is also undergoing a major enhancement, and as a result there are key dates we’d like to announce:

September 20th thru January 14th, 2019
Exams will be closed for both purchase and scheduling. The Certification Program will effectively be paused during this period. Any existing exam purchases and vouchers that have not been redeemed will be automatically extended by 4 months.

January 15th, 2019
Hortonworks University will relaunch the Certification Program.

This is an exciting time for us as we undergo this change. We also understand that you may be impacted by this change. For additional information and support, please visit the Hortonworks University Training Support Page using the button below.

Demand for Big Data Skills

IT hiring managers rate certifications as having extremely high or high value when rating expertise of candidates, based on a survey by CompTIA.

According to Forbes, the median advertised salary for professionals with big data certification or expertise is $124,000 a year

IBM, Cisco and Oracle together advertised 26,488 open positions that required big data expertise in the last twelve months.

Our Certification Program Mission

Hortonworks University creates meaningful big data certifications that are recognized in the industry as a confident measure of qualified, capable big data experts. How do we accomplish that mission?

Hortonworks certifications are exclusively hands on, performance-based exams that require you to complete a set of tasks.

By performing tasks on an actual Hadoop cluster instead of just guessing at multiple-choice questions, Hortonworks Certified Professionals have proven competency and big data expertise.

How to Become Certified

To become a Hortonworks Certified Professional, you need to earn at least one of our certifications:

HDP Certified Developer

For Hadoop developers using frameworks like Pig, Hive, Sqoop and Flume.

HDP Certified Apache Spark Developer

For developers responsible for developing Spark Core and Spark SQL applications in Scala or Python.

HDP Certified Administrator

Hortonworks certification for administrators who deploy and manage Hadoop clusters.

Hortonworks Certified Associate

For an entry point and fundamental skills required to progress to the higher levels of the Hortonworks big data certification program.

Earn Digital Badges

Hortonworks Certified Professionals receive a digital badge for each certification earned. Display your badges proudly on your resume, LinkedIn profile, email signature, etc. Each badge you earn is issued and verified by BadgeCert, a third-party digital badge authentication provider.

The practical oriented certification exam was really a great idea for Hadoop. It was challenging as well.

M. Rajendran, Barclays,

It was refreshing to be tested on a real set of machines. I could bring to bare all of my experience with linux, networking and the command line as well as my experience with Hadoop together to solve problems and do real work, in a way a multiple-choice test just can’t. It also meant I could combine approaches that exist in the real world for speed or ease that may not be honored in a constrained example. Thanks, it was a fun test to take!

E. Marshall, Airisdata,

It was a great exam and required a lot of study and knowledge of Hadoop. Keeping in mind the time constraints and number of questions to complete, this exam can teach you a lot. And questions test your knowledge – from mostly all of the prominent Hadoop tools which i like the most. I felt very confident after clearing this exam and right now I am working on a huge dataset in my current job.

How to Register

Follow the steps below to register for an exam. Our hands-on exams leverage virtual machines and require a high-speed internet connection. In order to ensure that you have the optimal experience, we do not recommend attempting the exams unless you meet the minimum connection requirements listed below. The cost of each exam is $250 USD. You can take the exam anytime, anywhere using your own computer.

Run a Speed Test to determine if you meet the recommended minimum requirements. Hortonworks University requires that you have a minimum network speed of 10 Mbps download and 2.5 Mbps upload (10/2.5),  however 20/5 Mbps (download/upload) or higher is strongly recommended. We also recommend you have at minimum 8 GB of RAM on your computer, but highly recommend 16 GB.

Visit the Certification Exam Frequently Asked Questions to review important requirements and guidelines.

If you have determined that you have met the recommended internet connection speed and other requirements, go to to purchase the exam.
