Building manageable, elastic Hadoop solutions

As businesses look to big data analytics to not only track performance but also to create business advantages, Hadoop is shifting from an application relevant solely to data warehousing experts to one with mainstream appeal, Microsoft's David Campbell explained in a recent interview with SQL Server Pro. The genesis of creating a Hadoop for Windows implementation was the desire to bridge the analytics platform the data industry had adopted with the standard enterprise environment.

"Although the early adopters will put up with 'crossing the chasm' sort of models, when it goes into the mainstream, people want solutions that are manageable," Campbell said. "So, we worked with the community to address important issues. How do we architect this so that we can build great solutions for everyone who participates in the ecosystem?"

Campbell explained that the company's forthcoming tools will achieve this goal, and he particularly highlighted the elasticity the new solution will allow. For instance, one enterprise user who has been previewing the new tool has found that they can scale up a Hadoop cluster to do as many as eight runs in a day, when previously only one was possible. The recently released Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows is the first iteration of Hadoop for Windows and provides integration that bridges existing analytics tools and Microsoft data management functions.
